The search engine on this site is quite intuitive. Just
enter the word as you speak. So, if I am searching for
the meaning of a hindi word for a king, I would type
"rajaa" in the search box and select the from language to
"hindi". The search engine would try to find an exact
match to the word you entered. If the word is found in the
language specified it is returned. Otherwise, it will
return you a list of words that sound like this word and
you will most probably find the word you are looking for
in that list. If you are totally unsure, you could use a
"%" character for a wildcard search. E.g. "raj%" would
look for all words starting with raj and provide you with
a list of matches.
The words are keyed in the database using a language
called ITRANS. It allows you to write indian language
words in english. The following is a table of various
ITRANS mappings for Hindi characters. There are certain
characters not mentioned in the following table. In those
cases, just type as you speak and you should get it. E.g.
vidya (knowledge) etc.
